Activity 3.2.3 – Alternative Energy- solar energy

Alternative Energy

Alternative energy is a renewable energy source. It does not use fossil fuels, but instead uses natural resources on earth. It is not the most relied upon energy source because of its limitations. Some examples of renewable resources are wind, solar, water, or biomass.

Arguments About Alternative Energy

  • Demand for energy is high although renewable resources are plentiful, non-renewable resources are used more.
  • Can eliminate common problems non-renewable resources create like, oil spills or pipeline leaks.
  • Unlike fossil fuels, it does not pollute air.
  • Using alternative energy sources will improve human health and climate change.

Solar energy

Solar energy is radiation from the sun that we use for heat and electricity. It is one of the prime factors on how we're alive and life on earth as well. Solar energy is a renewable source with pros and cons, like everything else.

Starting with some disadvantages of solar energy is Earth's rotation, which causes the sun not to be present in all areas of the globe. Meaning solar energy is useless for places that don't get a lot of sunshine. Due to the fact solar energy cannot be stored like coal can, which could be used on demand. Following, solar energy can cause minimal impact on the environment depending on where it is. In modern technology, to convert solar energy into heat and electricity photovoltaic cells are used. These cells have hazardous chemicals. Thus, needing to be handled with caution. Some solar thermal systems need to be cleaned regularly with water. The water is from underground wells, which can affect the ecosystem in some areas.

Next are some positives of using solar energy. The main two factors are we get to live our way of living with light and air conditioning almost everywhere. We use passive and active solar power for heating, cooling, and electricity. For example, the sun heating and lighting up a building through the windows. Active solar power on the other hand does use modern technology. Solar panels are a big thing for us which converts direct sunlight into electricity. Depending on how much and how big the solar panels are, they can provide electricity to a single house to thousands of homes. Another active solar power device is a solar thermal collector. The difference between this device compared to solar panels is it absorbs and transfers heat to a fluid, which then warms up a building.

Furthermore, heat and electricity are a necessity for people. Solar energy has its limitations by the sun's position around the globe. Yet, I believe the areas that have plenty of sun should resort to solar energy. It is a good way on depending less on fossil fuels that are not renewable. The sun has been here for centuries and will continue to be. It only makes sense to utilize solar energy where we can.
